DescriptionFounded in 1841 as the seat of Adair County, Kirksville was named for Jesse Kirk, who exchanged a turkey dinner for the right to name the town after himself. Truman State University and the A.T. Still University have transformed this former farming community into an important educational center.
The area's rural character still can be enjoyed in such nearby areas as the Big Creek and Sugar Creek conservation areas and at the larger Thousand Hills State Park. Thousand Hills offers petroglyphs with an interpretive shelter, and recreational facilities are offered at 573-acre Forest Lake.
