DescriptionThe village of Lake Placid lies on the shores of Mirror Lake and Lake Placid; the former provides a backdrop for the Main Street commercial district. Host of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, the area boasts downhill skiing at Whiteface Mountain, 8 miles north in Wilmington , as well as other competitive and recreational sports activities at both state-operated and private facilities.
Summer recreational facilities include foot and bicycle paths, private and public beaches, tennis courts, six golf courses, hiking trails and the indoor Olympic Arena for summer ice skating. Boats can be rented at either lake. Whiteface Mountain provides gondola rides over grassy ski slopes, and the Whiteface Mountain Veterans' Memorial Highway runs almost to the summit.
