DescriptionAfter the 1844 death of religious leader Joseph Smith Jr. in Illinois, many Mormons followed Brigham Young west to Utah on the Mormon Trail. Among the members who chose to settle in the Iowa Territory was Joseph Smith III, who eventually founded his own church. He selected Lamoni as the headquarters for the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, later known as the Community of Christ, in 1881. The headquarters was later moved to Independence, Mo. Three of Smith's sons succeeded him in the church leadership; one also served as an Iowa state representative.
