DescriptionThe many bays and channels (cheneaux) created by the 36 wooded islands that dot Lake Huron off the south shore of the eastern Upper Peninsula account for the islands' name as well as their popularity. This is one of the most scenic snowmobiling, boating, paddling and fishing areas in the state. Government Island is maintained as an uninhabited isle by the Hiawatha National Forest.
Marinas in both Hessel and Cedarville offer boater access to the channels and islands. An information center on SR 134 at Cedarville is open Mon.-Fri. 10-4.
