DescriptionLewellen occupies a sandy prairie made arable by the nearby North Platte River, where fishing and bird-watching are popular pastimes. Important crops include wheat, corn and alfalfa. During the mid-1800s the area was a stop on the Mormon Trail, which generally followed the north bank of the North Platte to points westward; on the south bank was the Oregon Trail.
Nearby Windlass Hill, near Ash Hollow State Historical Park on US 26, was known as a treacherous landmark for pioneers who risked losing their wagons if they dared to descend its steep slope. Those who prevailed were rewarded with rest and fresh water at the springs below.
