DescriptionLincoln's historical claim to fame is tied to an Old West gunslinger born to Irish immigrant parents. William Henry McCarty, Jr.—better known as Billy the Kid—was tried, convicted and sentenced to hang as retribution for a life of rustling and murder, but instead he killed his guards and escaped from the Lincoln County Courthouse. Sheriff Pat Garrett tracked him to Fort Sumner, where two shots ended the outlaw's life on July, 14, 1881 at the young age of 21.
Fort Stanton Recreation Area, approximately 9 miles west of town off US 380, comprises 24,000 acres of BLM-managed lands in the foothills of the Sierra Blanca Mountains. Mountain streams, rolling hills, flat-topped mesas and open bottomlands offer a variety of outdoor activities.
