The community is a trading center for the farming, dairying and lumbering interests in the area. Washburn-Norlands Living History Center , 290 Norlands Rd., is a working farm and museum. The former estate of the Washburn family, the center now operates as an educational facility offering a glimpse into 19th-century life in rural Maine. The 445-acre estate includes a one-room schoolhouse, a stone library, a Universalist meeting house, the Washburn family mansion, a farmer's cottage and a nature trail.
