DescriptionFounded in 1836 when construction began on the Illinois and Michigan Canal, Lockport remains one of the best preserved canal towns in the country. A number of old locks as well as a modern lock on the Illinois Waterway can be seen.
Heritage Village, formerly known as Pioneer Settlement at 249 W. 2nd St., includes a 19th-century depot, a village jail, a one-room schoolhouse, a smokehouse and an 1860 farm house. Guided tours are available by appointment; phone (815) 838-5080. Lockport Prairie Nature Preserve protects a remnant of the extensive prairies that once blanketed the Midwest.
