The Battle of Lone Jack, one of the bloodiest Civil War battles in Missouri, occurred Aug. 16, 1862. Five days earlier Confederate troops had captured Independence and its Union garrison. Joined by reinforcements a few days later, the Confederates moved to Lone Jack, where they clashed with Union troops in hand-to-hand combat for 5 hours until the Union troops retreated.
