DescriptionThe Los Altos area was on the route of a 1775-76 expedition led by Spanish commander Juan Bautista de Anza from Mexico into Alta (Upper) California. The purpose of this overland journey was to establish a Spanish presence, including a presidio and mission, near the Bay of San Francisco. In the early 20th century the city became a railroad link between Palo Alto and Los Gatos, which spurred development.
Each July the city celebrates the Los Altos Arts and Wine Festival. The 2-day juried event, held downtown, features arts and crafts created by more than 400 artisans, concerts, children's activities, and booths offering food and wine from local merchants and vineyards.
