DescriptionVineyards, wheat fields and row crops surround little Lowden, first called Frenchtown due to the many French Canadians who settled in the Walla Walla Valley during the early 19th century. The present name salutes pioneer homesteader Francis M. Lowden Sr.
Frenchtown Historic Site, e. on Old Highway 12, interprets the early settlement of the Walla Walla Valley starting in 1823. The area was on a branch of the Oregon Trail and the scene of the 1855 Battle of Walla Walla. The site includes history markers, a restored French Canadian cabin and a trail to a pioneer cemetery.
