Named for Reformation leader Martin Luther, the town was founded by two Lutheran ministers and one Lutheran layman in 1852 as the location for a seminary for young women. Lutherville developed a reputation as a summer resort and eventually became a suburb of Baltimore. A historic district preserves 19th-century homes.
