The Mactaquac Dam Project, completed in 1968, displaced several thousand residents along the Saint John River; farms, roads, a railroad line and entire towns were submerged beneath the Mactaquac head pond, which extends some 97 kilometres (60 mi.) upriver from the dam and is used for storing water. Historically significant buildings were relocated from the flood plain to Kings Landing Historical Settlement.
