DescriptionA year-round vacation center, Manitowish Waters is in the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest. One of the area’s highlights is its interconnected chain of 10 lakes that together cover 4,265 acres. Mountain bikers, hikers, snowshoers and cross-country skiers pass by a lake, a bog and the Manitowish River on 12 miles of winding forest trails at the North Lakeland Discovery Center at 215 CR W, 1.2 miles north of FR 51. Part of the Great Wisconsin Birding & Nature Trail, Powell Marsh Wildlife Area lies north of Lac du Flambeau and provides a home for waterfowl, deer, ruffed grouse, fur-bearing animals, raptors, shorebirds, songbirds and other wildlife.
A free cranberry marsh tour is offered Fridays at 10, early July to early October. A video, cranberry refreshments and a question-and-answer session are offered at the community center before vehicles motorcade to a marsh for an up-close look; phone (715) 543-8488 or (888) 626-9877 for the chamber of commerce.
