Priest Rapids and Wanapum dams, two major hydroelectric dams built on the Columbia River in the 1950s, created Priest Rapids and Wanapum lakes. Both reservoirs offer several public recreation areas. Irrigated orchards and vineyards cover the riverside benches. East of town, the Wahluke Slope wine growing appellation extends along the lower slopes of Saddle Mountain.
