DescriptionIncorporated as a town in 1874, Meaford is a waterfront community on the outskirts of Ontario’s farmland. Numerous examples of late 19th century architecture can be found in the town. Memorial Park provides opportunities for camping, swimming and picnicking, and the Georgian Trail provides bicycling and hiking opportunities. Other summer recreational activities include boating, fishing and golfing, while snowmobiling and skiing are available in winter.
Beautiful Joe Park is dedicated to a dog named Beautiful Joe who was abused before being rescued and adopted by a loving family. The dog's story was memorialized by Canadian author Margaret Marshall Saunders in her 1893 novel “Beautiful Joe.” The park, at Edwin and Berry streets, contains Beautiful Joe's gravesite. Animal lovers are attracted to its 3 hectares (8 acres) to view the tributes to K-9 units from around the world. For information phone (519) 538-5895.
