DescriptionThe town was named after the postmaster's Australian hometown in 1879. Economic growth came in the late 1890s with the arrival of the Florida East Coast Railway. The introduction of another innovative form of travel—space flight—led to the development of high-tech and electronics industries, an additional benefit of the city's proximity to the Kennedy Space Center.
ShoppingMelbourne Square Mall, 2 miles east of I-95 on US 192 at 1700 W. New Haven Ave., contains Dillard's, JCPenney and Macy's. The downtown Historic District has specialty and antique shops.
