DescriptionMidway between Salisbury and New Haven, Middlebury was founded in 1761. A ranger district office at 1007 SR 7S provides maps and guides for hiking in nearby Green Mountain National Forest; phone (802) 388-4362.
Middlebury College was chartered in 1800; the present enrollment exceeds 2,500. The campus includes Painter Hall, Vermont's oldest college building, built in 1816. Emma Hart Willard, a pioneer in American women's education, began her work in 1807 when she became the principal of Middlebury Female Academy. The school plays host to the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference in summer.
