Established in 1792 and renamed in honor of Governor Thomas Mifflin in 1827, Mifflinburg was a buggy-making town. Between 1841 and 1924, 75 independent buggy makers called this borough home. Because of the quality of its product, the town produced more buggies per capita than any other Pennsylvania town, as many as 6,000 vehicles annually. In fact, in 1880 the town came to be known by the nickname “Buggy Town.”
