DescriptionMiles City developed on the bottomland at the confluence of the Tongue and Yellowstone rivers. Gen. Nelson A. Miles arrived at the mouth of the Tongue River in August 1876 to force the Cheyenne and Sioux to return to the reservations. Miles built Fort Keogh at the site in 1877 and used it as a base for controlling the local tribes.
Main Street in times past was a block of saloons, gambling dens and brothels on the south, and banks, businesses and pawn shops on the north. Miles City has become a growing retail and service hub for eastern Montana and a center for cattle, sheep and crop farms.
