Joseph Goodrich, an abolitionist from New York, fostered the growth of Milton when he established a stagecoach inn in 1844 on the site of three well-traveled trails. That same year marked the founding of Milton College, which closed in 1982. The former campus now accommodates a museum and visitor center as well as antiques and crafts shops. Milton is a leading manufacturer of electronic medical instruments. Agribusiness also supports the community.
The Milton area provides many opportunities for recreation, including hiking through the Storrs Lake nature preserve, traversing the Ice Age Trail, golfing or boating on one of five nearby lakes.
