DescriptionOnce inhabited by the Montaukett Indians, Montauk is a resort on a peninsula along the south shore of extreme eastern Long Island. The “cod ledge” off the banks of Montauk is one of the most renowned fishing areas in the world.
Hither Hills State Park and Montauk Point State Park has various recreational facilities. Montauk County Park also offers recreational facilities as well as the 1799 Third House Museum.
A passenger ferry to Block Island, R.I., departs from Viking Landing daily at 10, mid-June to mid-Sept. (also Sun. at 3:30, early July-late Aug.); Fri.-Sun. at 10, late May to mid-June. The ferry returns at 6; phone (631) 668-5700.
