DescriptionThe town’s name was chosen in 1861 from a Biblical passage in reference to its relatively high elevation. Although settled by people of English, German, Irish, Scottish and Swiss descent, the largest percentage of residents originally came from Norway. Evidence of the town’s Scandinavian heritage can be seen along Main Street, its main thoroughfare, known as “The Trollway” thanks to all the carved wooden troll statues that line it. According to Norwegian folklore, the trolls bring good luck.
The 40-mile Military Ridge State Trail, converted from a Chicago and Northwestern Railroad line, runs through Mount Horeb; the trailhead is downtown. Popular with bicyclists, cross-country skiers, inline skaters, hikers, joggers, snowmobilers and snowshoers, it's open daily from 6 a.m.-11 p.m.; phone (608) 437-7393.
