DescriptionMount Pleasant boasted the first courthouse in the state. In the mid-19th century a plank road was built from Burlington to Mount Pleasant—no small accomplishment during a time when most roads were slightly improved trails riddled with rocks and ruts. The town was home to Belle Mansfield, the country's first female attorney.
Harlan-Lincoln House, 7 blocks north of US 34 on the Iowa Wesleyan College campus, was the home of Sen. James Harlan. Original furnishings and personal mementos are exhibited; phone (319) 385-6215.
The area's rural agricultural heritage is the focus of Midwest Old Threshers Reunion in early September. Steam engine rides are a highlight of this event held in McMillan Park.
