DescriptionIn 1859 Abraham Lincoln successfully argued an important tax case in the Mount Vernon Appellate courthouse. In 1888 Clara Barton used the same building as a hospital following a large tornado. The city serves as a gateway to the expansive Rend Lake wildlife and recreation area.
Several landmarks are preserved in the Jefferson County Historical Society Historical Village , 1411 N. 27th St., including Mount Olive Church, a one-room schoolhouse, a general store, an operating blacksmith shop, log cabins and an 1820 jail; phone (618) 246-0033.
