Munster sits at the northwest corner of the state, a suburb of Chicago. Settlement along the Little Calumet River began in the mid-19th century with an inn and tavern to serve Chicago-bound travelers. Dutch farmers succeeded in draining Cady Marsh to create hundreds of acres of fields that supplied vegetables for city markets. The town was incorporated in 1907, taking its name from the local postmaster, Jacob Munster, whose family surname in the Netherlands was spelled “Monster.”
