On the Willapa Bay shore of the Long Beach Peninsula, Nahcotta is an important oyster center. Oyster dredging on the bay dates back to the mid-19th century and huge mounds of oyster shells line the bayfront. Established in 1888 as the terminus of a narrow-gauge railroad linking the bay with Ilwaco on the Columbia River, its name commemorates a Chinook chief who befriended early settlers.
