DescriptionNewmarket was established as a trading center for trappers and farmers in the early 1800s and later became a commercial hub. Simpson's, one of Canada's largest department store chains, was founded in Newmarket in 1870. Nineteenth-century buildings and period street lights add to Main Street's historic ambience.
Cultural offerings are provided by the Aurora Opera Co. at the Newmarket Theatre, 505 Pickering Crescent. The Holland River Trail System and Fairy Lake provide opportunities for recreational activities and such cultural events as the York Shakespeare Festival.
