DescriptionNewton typifies the development of manufacturing in a mainly agricultural state. The washing machine industry began when F.L. Maytag introduced a hand-powered washer. An electric motor later was added, followed by the development of the cabinet type of cylinder washer. By 1925 Newton's industrial boom had started, and workers streamed into the city. Soon, the demand for washers far exceeded their production. Maytag Co. was acquired by Whirlpool Corp. in 2006, and the Newton facilities were subsequently closed.
Today Newton attracts art and sculpture enthusiasts, history buffs, motorsports fans and festival-goers. Automobile racing takes place at Iowa Speedway. An 8-mile hiking and bicycling trail loops around Newton. Since 1934, the lighting of the Jasper County Courthouse and Christmas parade is held Friday after Thanksgiving.
