Its position on the seacoast about midway between Portland, Maine, and Boston prompted many of the wealthy from both cities to build summer homes in North Hampton in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One such estate was Runnymede-by-the-Sea, belonging to former Massachusetts governor Alvan T. Fuller. Although the house no longer exists, the gardens remain as an attractive legacy of the era.
