DescriptionNowata received its name from a Delaware Indian word, no-we-ata, meaning “welcome.” The Delaware tribe, called Lenape in their native language, migrated to the Cherokee Nation in 1866, following an agreement set forth by the Cherokee. The pact allowed the newcomers to reside within the Cherokee Nation yet retain their independence as Delaware Indians.
