DescriptionOcean Grove, a family-oriented seaside resort, has been under the leadership of the Camp Meeting Association of the United Methodist Church since 1869. Pop music and symphony concerts, cultural events, and religious services and programs take place throughout the summer at the 6,500-seat Great Auditorium, 21 Pilgrim Pathway. Organ concerts are given Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons on a 1908 Hope-Jones pipe organ. For Great Auditorium schedule and ticket information phone the box office at (800) 590-4064.
Many of the community's houses exhibit a Victorian architectural style. Centennial Cottage, a restored 1879 vacation home at Central Avenue and McClintock Street, is maintained by the local historical society and is open to visitors in the summer. The Museum of the Historical Society of Ocean Grove , 50 Pitman Ave., has a collection of about 15,000 items, including photographs, postcards, glass negatives, maps, artwork and furniture; phone (732) 774-1869.
Also of interest is the tent colony that surrounds the Great Auditorium; both are part of the historical society's guided 90-minute Ocean Grove walking tour. A tabernacle, a chapel, pavilions, parks, the boardwalk and the beach make up Ocean Grove's chautauqua-like setting. The walking tour is available mid-June to mid-September; for information phone (732) 774-1869.
