DescriptionThe Oneida Community was founded nearby in 1848 by John Noyes. A religious and social commune who called themselves Perfectionists, they shared all property and looked for ways of improving their self. The communal way of life was abandoned in 1881. However a joint stock corporation was formed to carry on the manufacturing activities. The present corporation has retained some cooperative features; Oneida Ltd. has factories and home offices in the area as well as in Sherrill, where silverware is made.
