DescriptionIn 1805 members of Meriwether Lewis' and William Clark's expedition passed near the present site of Orofino on their way west. The first gold miners swarmed into the area 60 years later from California, and soon Idaho's first permanent settlements began to take shape. Orofino is on the Nez Perce Indian Reservation, and the Clearwater River runs through the town's boundaries. The Clearwater National Forest and Nez Perce National Forest are nearby.
Orofino's economy relies on lumbering, farming and government employment. A long growing season, ample precipitation and fertile soil contribute to the prosperity of this agricultural community. Northwest of Orofino, near Ahsahka, is the Dworshak National Fish Hatchery and Dworshak Dam and Reservoir.
