DescriptionOskaloosa was founded by Daniel Boone's nephew, Capt. Nathan Boone, who led U.S. troops into the Iowa wilderness and established a fort at The Narrows between the Des Moines and Chiquaqua rivers in 1835. Quakers settled here in 1843. The community was named for the wife of Seminole leader Osceola; it translates to “last of the beautiful.” The 15-mile Mahaska Community Trail loops around Oskaloosa.
The city band, one of the oldest in the state, performs band concerts in the restored city square bandstand throughout the summer. Frederick Knight Logan, composer of the “Missouri Waltz,” was born in Oskaloosa. The George Daily Auditorium also is host to theater and music performances.
Main Street's Lighted Christmas Parade held the Thursday after Thanksgiving ushers in the holiday season.
