DescriptionIt was gold that brought prospectors in search of their fortunes to this area in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada during California's gold rush. Although a 54-pound nugget was found nearby, the frenzy for gold eventually died down. Many miners stayed, however, establishing farms, orchards, sawmills and shops. Activities for visitors include nature trail hiking and biking, boating, fishing, gold panning and back-road excursions to old mining sites.
