Henry R. Bennett, a traveling salesman, laid out the town of Parksley in 1884 during construction of the Eastern Shore Railway. In the 160-acre planned community, selling liquor meant the immediate loss of one's property. Benjamin Parks, upon whose farm Parksley was built, soon fled the constraints of town life for a new seaside home.
