Pembroke is a center for approximately 40,000 members of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina living in Robeson County. It is thought that some of them may be descendants of the “Lost Colony.” They were initially denied full U.S. citizenship, but protests during the Civil War and the persistence of Lumbee leader Henry Berry Lowrie eventually convinced the North Carolina Legislature to extend voting rights.
Pembroke also is the home of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. The Givens Performing Arts Center, on campus off University Drive, features various performances year-round; phone (910) 521-6287.
