Just south of Pickstown is the 500-acre Karl E. Mundt National Wildlife Refuge, a sanctuary for the nation's symbol, the bald eagle. The birds spend the winter at the refuge and return north to nest in spring. The refuge is closed to the public for the eagles' protection, but the birds can be seen from a viewing area below the spillway of the Fort Randall Dam.
