Description
Plant City was named after Henry Bradley Plant, a wealthy railroad magnate, but the town is best known for its plant crop, the strawberry. The majority of all the winter strawberries in the United States is grown on farms surrounding Plant City. The annual Florida Strawberry Festival draws some 800,000 visitors in late February and early March; phone (813) 752-9194.
The town is home to the International Softball Federation, the world governing body for softball competition; phone (813) 864-0100.
A 700-acre reservoir created from a reclaimed phosphate mining area is the center of recreational activities in Edward Medard Park, 6140 Turkey Creek Rd.; phone (813) 757-3802.
The Pioneer/Heritage Museum , in the 1914 Plant City High School Community Center at 605 N. Collins St., has several exhibit rooms with period themes such as clothing, furnishings, medical equipment, farm implements and railroading; phone (813) 757-9226 for tour reservations.
