At the joining of three rivers, Pojoaque (po-WALK-ee) was named “the water-drinking place” by the Tewa tribe. Smallpox wiped out the settlement twice before it was abandoned in 1915. Tribal members returned in the 1930s, and casino gambling now drives the local economy.
