An important 19th-century railroad and river transportation hub, Port Jervis was named for John B. Jervis, chief engineer of the Delaware and Hudson Canal. One of two railroad turntables built around the turn of the 20th century is still in operation.
Stephen Crane reputedly drew inspiration for “The Red Badge of Courage” while interviewing veterans of New York's 124th Regiment at the 1886 dedication of a Civil War monument in Veterans Memorial Park at Orange Square.
