DescriptionPortsmouth, once the most populous town in the colony, was settled in 1638. The first settlers, among them free-speech advocate Anne Hutchinson, landed at Founders' Brook on Boyd's Lane. On Pudding Rock is a bronze tablet inscribed with a copy of the Portsmouth Compact. At Butts Hill Fort off Sprague Street, Portsmouth later witnessed Rhode Island's only major land battle of the Revolution.
