Prairie City nestles near the base of 9,000-foot Strawberry Mountain at the eastern end of the upper John Day Valley. Founded in 1868, the town became Grant County’s prime shipping point in 1910 when the narrow-gauge Sumpter Valley Railroad linked it with the Union Pacific system mainline in Baker City.
