DescriptionConnecticut's only inland battle of the Revolutionary War was fought at the village of Ridgefield on Apr. 27, 1777. Troops led by American generals Benedict Arnold, Gold Selleck Silliman and David Wooster attempted to hold off British forces returning to Long Island Sound from a raid on Danbury. Outnumbered three to one, the patriots were forced to retreat after a fierce daylong fight. Though the British considered it a victory, thousands of revolutionary soldiers would rush to the area within hours, preventing future attacks.
