Rogers City's principal industry is readily apparent: Possibly the world's largest open limestone quarry—more than 3 miles long and nearly 2 miles across at its widest point—extends southeastward from the city limits. The quarry has been worked continuously since 1912. Operations can be seen from the rim of the pit at Quarry View, on Petersville Road (US 23 Business Route). The viewing area is always open, but most activity begins in the afternoon and continues into the evening. The docking and loading of the huge freighters are visible from Harbor View, a fenced area a half-mile past the plant gate, which is accessed via Calcite Road. The site is closed in winter but otherwise is open in the morning and throughout the day until around 10 p.m.
Established during the 1870s lumber boom, Rogers City remains the largest community in Presque Isle County. Recreational opportunities abound year-round for those interested in ATV trails, biking, boating, camping, canoeing, fishing, hiking, hunting, kayaking, skiing, snowboarding and swimming. P.H. Hoeft State Park is 6 miles northwest on US 23 and includes a section of Huron dunes. Ocqueoc Falls, the largest falls in the Lower Peninsula, is 12 miles west of Rogers City off SR 68. A 7-mile self-guiding trail originates there.
