DescriptionThe area south of Roosevelt was the site of the discovery of Gilsonite, a brittle asphalt used in the manufacture of pipe insulation and ink. The Uinta Basin deposit was discovered in 1885 by Samuel H. Gilson, who was told by Native Americans of a substance that would not burn.
