DescriptionA resort town on eastern Lake Ontario, Sackets Harbor saw one of the first battles in the War of 1812, when five British battleships were repelled by one U.S. ship and a group of farmers on shore with a single cannon. The only British shot to land near the farmers was loaded into the cannon and returned; it took down the mast of the British flagship.
The Old Military Cemetery on Dodge Avenue has graves of soldiers from the War of 1812, including that of Gen. Zebulon Pike, discoverer of Pikes Peak.
