Salem is a Quaker town founded in 1806 by Zadok Street and John Strawn. Before the Civil War the town was a station on the Underground Railroad and headquarters for the Western Anti-Slavery Society. One of John Brown's raiders, Edwin Coppock, is honored with a 12-foot sandstone monument in Hope Cemetery on N. Lincoln Street.
