DescriptionSallisaw, surrounded by agricultural land in the northeastern section of the state, got its name from a French word meaning “salt provisions.” Early settlers and bison hunters discovered salt deposits along streams in the area and used the salt to preserve meat.
Dwight Mission, about 9 miles northwest, operated as a mission school for the Cherokee for more than a century after its founding in 1828.
